Level bombing is what the RN became expert at COUNTERING in the Med and North Sea in 1939, 40, and 41. Be it slowing enemy capital ships to force opposing battle-fleets to engage ( something they considered important after Jutland) or sinking ships in harbor (something they considered vital after the Abyssinian Crisis of 1935). The RN placed supreme importance in the lap of the torpedo. I understand the need for gimmicks to add 'flavor' to different in-game lines.īut these could at least attempt to reflect historical accuracy It's also why they tried (and failed) to combine both the key roles of torpedo bomber and dive bomber in the Barracuda strike aircraft of WW2. That's why they had to get the political work-around Skua Fighter-Dive Bomber. They saw the potential of its inherent accuracy. But not the RN and its (then) unofficial Fleet Air Arm. Yes, the RAF hated the concept of dive bombing in the 1930s. But even the early RN bombers were shallow or glide bombers. The US experimented with level-bombing with its Martin T4M bombers in the early 30s. Hinted at in the varous developer blogs, this was absolutely NOT Royal Navy Carrier doctrine. To balance, it will likely mean a large margin of error for a large number of dropped bombs. I assume this means, in game, that aircraft won't dive. I'm not much of a fan of this proposed 'special ability' for RN carriers: Carpet bombing.
